Lima is used under the hood in rancher desktop, which is another great option if you would prefer to have a gui. This works nicely in particular for local development while using a VPN client, which I have found has a tendency to interfere with local network traffic (if split tunneling is disabled). One of nice features of lima is that it automatically forwards ports from the host vm to guest, so when you start up a container listening on port 5432, for example, you can access it at localhost:5432. It also supports M1 Macs, and even Intel on Arm emulation (at a pretty hefty performance cost). Lima is built on qemu, which is always a solid choice for virtualization. It’s only a couple of commands to get up and running with their docker example.

Since we are doing this setup for local development, we will allow an empty root password for the server.

To set up MySQL, use the following steps: On the right, you will see a list of container images from the Docker Hub. On the left side, you will see all the containers you have. Here, on the top left you will see your Docker Hub user ID which Kitematic will automatically pick from Docker Desktop. To Open Kitematic, click on the Kitematic Icon in applications.Once successfully logged in, you can see your user ID in place of Sign In/Create Docker ID in the Docker menu like the following screenshot.Enter your Docker Hub credentials and click on the Sign In button. Click on the Whale Icon and click on Sign In/Create Docker ID option as shown in the following screenshot.Once Docker is installed, click the Docker icon in applications and you will see the Whale in the menu bar, like in the following image.

To install just unzip the file, double click the setup file and follow the setup instruction of the setup exe.
